I have been using vista windows mail for the last 5 months, suddenly I can
receive but not send. One minute I was able to send messages, 15mins later I
was not able too. I am using my school server which is
student.mail.uoguelph.com......all my settings are correct. I am using Avast
antivirus software. When I try to send I get a Windows Security window that
says:

Logon to Student.mail.uoguelph.ca
Please verify that both the username and password are correct for your mail
server.

I fill this part out with my username and password and the screen pops up
again and again.

I have deleted my account and created a new one...does not help, turned off
antivirus etc.

Could this be a problem on my server side from school or this a problem with
Vista.

Thanks Candice

I am experiencing a very similar problem. It just started today. I have
been using Vista mail for about 2 months now. It was working fine.

One minute I could send and receive and now I can do neither. It keeps
giving me the security window telling me to log in with my user name and
password.

I enter it and the screen pops up over and over.

I, like you, fooled with the account settings. Nothing helped. I checked
with my server to see that I had it all set up correctly. I had. I deleted
the account and rebooted the computer and set it all up again. I keep
getting the security window again, and again, and again, and again!!!!!!!!!

Anybody have any suggestions? It's making me crazy.

Thankfully, I can go to my server's website and get my mail from there but
this computer should work the way I want it to. I spent so much money buying
new programs because nothing that works with XP will work on Vista. After my
old computer died, I would have bought an XP again had I known it'd be so
much trouble. Now this. Enough already.

Thanks for listening.

It is very likely that this problem is caused by your antivirus
program. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled,
not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

If after doing the above, it still doesn't work, delete that email
account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

Thanks so much for your answer, Gary. However, my antivirus program is
Windows Live One Care. I looked through all the setting options and did not
see anything that relates to scanning email.
tuneup, backup, viruses and spyware, firewall, logging. I checked each.
Windows mail is allowed by the firewall. That is the only place it is
mentioned.
I have the phishng filter turned off.

I already deleted the account, restarted the computer and added the account
and it didn't work. I'll certainly try it again.

I'll go to the oe help site and take a look too.
Again, thank you.

I found that the virus and spyware monitoring can be turned either off or on.
I turned it off and it says my computer is vulnerable. I do not see the
option to turn only the email scanning off.
Thanks. Gazinga

Hi,

Yes I can login online through my webmail account, but for some reason I
cant seem to send mail from Windows Mail but can recieve, I have completed
all the steps you mentioned in previous posts, I am using Avast, I have
deleted my account and created a new one, plus I have had no problems for the
past 5 months so nothing has changed. Could a port be a problem??? If my
school had changed their security settings or port etc, would that create a
problem on my end? Or does this have something to do with Windows or a virus
etc.

Thanks again

If your school had changed a port number (very unlikely),
you wouldn't get as far in the process as the username/password
challenge. It is possible that they changed the security (authentication)
requirements. Try this: Go to Tools, Accounts, select the uoguelph.ca
account, Properties, Servers. Select the box for "My server requires
authentication." Click OK, and try sending.

Hi,

Thanks for your response, so I checked online at school and apparently we
are having a server problem that will affect local email like outlook and
thunderbird (I am assuming windows mail is the same). However I still find
it strange that I can receive from the server but not send. As well the
problem is only during high traffic times, and I am having this issue all the
time.....so i am not sure if they are related.

I did what you said, but it did not fix the problem. Not sure what else
there is that I can do.

Can I test it with another server like hotmail or something. The same way
my school one is connected????

Receiving and sending often involve different servers, so one may be our but
the other still working.

The sending and receiving processes are entirely separate, and in fact,
large mail providers often use different incoming and outgoing mail servers.
It is not at all unusual for receiving to work and sending to fail, or vice versa.

Windows Mail does not accommodate Hotmail accounts. If you have an
existing Hotmail account you would like to use, you would need to
upgrade your Windows Mail to the free Windows Live Mail:
http://get.live.com/wl/all

Another option is to get a free Gmail account, configure that
account for POP access, then add it to your Windows Mail.

The 'fixes' you have been advised thus far to try are worthless: Like you, I
have been using Vista and Windows Mail on this new laptop for 5 months. My
mail server is a small, independent server - triton.net - based in Michigan
USA I just started getting the same *&##!%$#%$!#! Windows Security pop-up
that you're getting. Last week, I just fixed the (*&%$%@ problem with
outgoing emails getting stuck in the Outbox. Now this. I've been opposed to
the death penalty all my life - until now...

I just went to Start - Control Panel - Windows Update, ran Update, installed
an update - and now W. Mail is Sending.

Not long ago, I had an issue with the Windows Security box popping up and
asking me to logon. I decided to turn off my computer and then later that day
or next day when I turned it on, no problem everything was working ok. Well,
here I am again today, since this morning, trying to send out email and it
won't send. I'm receiving emails ok, everything I want to send is still in my
outbox. So, I went to Control panel as you did and checked windows update,
but my system says my windows update is to date. So, I don't know what to do
to correct this situation. Any ideas?

Try moving the emails that are in the Outbox to the Drafts folder.
If one is stuck, use the Microsoft fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

To prevent this from happening again in the future, you may need
to change your antivirus program.

Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee

uninstalled, not just disabled.

I have been using the same antivirus software for the last few months and
have only encountered this problem now! Why wouldn't it have been doing this
from day one? So, my issue is not just that I can't send messages, but I keep
getting the windows security box log on. So, does that need a different fix?

I also am having the same problem, I am using windows vista, and I get the
login screen over and over again. somehow I believe its a thing with windows
vista. Has anyone fixed their problem with it? If so how? Thanks, Donna

Over time, some antivirus programs tend to corrupt Windows Mail
accounts. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and
Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, NOT
just disabled.

If after uninstalling your antivirus the Windows Mail problem does
not improve, delete the corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail,
then recreate that account.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

it's a VISTA problem which microsoft should've fixed a long time ago. Seems
there should be some way to bring a class-action suit against what microsoft
has done to its trsting customers.
