I have windows xp home edition and just recently when I go to my search
button in the start menu it seems to freeze and I can`t search for
anything..... I can still use my computer but have to switch it off by the
hard drive........ is there away I can fix this error without starting my
computer from factory settings and losing everything?

Many Thanks

Hi Grahame,

Try turning off the Indexing service. Click Start, Run, type
services.msc and click OK. Scroll down to "Indexing Service" and right
click on it and select Stop. Leave that window open and try a search.

If that works, go back to the Indexing Service, double click on it and
select "Disabled" from the drop-down list for Startup Type, click OK.
Close the Services window.

I disable the Indexing Service on most the XP systems I work on. It's
supposed to inventory everything on the drive when the computer is idle.
It doesn't always wait until the computer is idle, slowing things down.
