When I do a windows search and cancel it before it completes, the search
window hangs and I have to stop it using task manager. Why does this
happen and how can I avoid it? Thanks.

Hi Victor,

Try turning off the Indexing service. Click Start, Run, type
services.msc and click OK. Scroll down to "Indexing Service" and right
click on it and select Stop. Leave that window open and try a search.

If that works, go back to the Indexing Service, double click on it and
select "Disabled" from the drop-down list for Startup Type, click OK.
Close the Services window.

I disable the Indexing Service on most the XP systems I work on. It's
supposed to inventory everything on the drive when the computer is idle.
It doesn't always wait until the computer is idle, slowing things down.

Hmmm.....nice sense of humour Terry.

I tried dissabling indexing and that didn't help. Any other suggestions??

Thanks John, yes I do use Acronis TrueImage. Any way to tell the search to
ignore the backup files?

Do you have Acronis True Image on your computer? That will cause it if it's searching within a backup image
