I'm running Windows XP SP2.

What is the wildcard search (Start > Search) character? Asterisk (*)
doesn't work for me.

Right... Searching for
*.8bf
doesn't find anything. But, I know there are plenty of them there.
I have
"Search system folders" checked
"Search hidden files and folders" checked
"Search Subfolders" checked
And I am searching in the right drive.

Under the Look In Box make sure the systems is searching in the right place
such as Local Hard Drives C:

John.

Search My Computer.

This shouldn't be the problem but go to Start, Control Panel, Folder
Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden
files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files
" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You
should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known
file types" is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View,
Details is selected and then select View, Choose Details and check
before Name, Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

Hope this helps.

I just confirmed all of the settings that Gerry suggested. Everyone of them
was as he described. But, it the process I checked and unchecked a couple of
them to make sure...
It now works!
It even finds the .8bf files in their original zip download containers!
Maybe sometimes you just have to hit Windows up-side the head.
