In the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article ID # 256986

Microsoft states the that there are four (4) supporting files for the
Registry Hive HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System
They list the supporting files as
(1) System
(2) System.alt
(3) System.log
(4) System.sav
Specifically, with Windows XP, is there such a file as System.alt - I don't
see it showing in the WINDOWS\System32\config folder - I do see a file label
SysEvent.evt - is this the System.alt file - has it been renamed ??? or is
the System.alt file not applicable to Windows XP ???
