my system has crashed and i need to obtain files from my
documents that i need, the fault reads \windows\system32
\config\sytem

i have tried using knowledge base 307545 but it says the
filke cant be copied. is there any other way of getting
access to my files
? please help

Another option before you do a repair install is put the drive in
another computer that can read ntfs and copy the data off the drive.
That way if the repair install doesn't work you at least have your data.

The files are not in your MY Documents. To simplify 307545 a bit, I
suggest you Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD
and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any
password requested is blank, and TAB over.

Use CD to
CD \C:\Windows\system32\config
then
COPY SYSTEM.SAV SYSTEM
COPY SOFTWARE.SAV SOFTWARE
COPY SAM.SAV SAM

That ought to let you then boot (without the CD) , hitting F8 as BIOS
info goes black, to Safe Mode and the Administrator account. There use
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore
and restore back to a point made recently but while things were working
