Windows randomly reboots after fresh install.

System specs:

Celeron 2.4 GhZ
Geforce FX5500 256MB
1 Gig of ram.

I just reformatted my hard drive this weekend, and re-installed Windows XP
Home.
There were no serious problems before formatting, other than the fact that
things
were kind of slow due to how much crap had built up.

SO I formatted to an NTFS filesystem, and installed WIndows. I've since
updated all
my drivers, and installed 2 or 3 applications (Firefox, Winrar, Winamp, not
much
else).

So now, the computer, without warning, reboots. So far it seems to happen
when installing
programs, but not EVERY TIME I install a program. Today it happened when I
was trying
to download a 40MB file. Earlier it happened when trying to view a YouTube
video.
Windows doesn't shut down/logoff, it's instant. System doesn't go through
scandisk
or mention any error when it boots back up.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Your system is set to automatically reboot when it crashes. You need to
uncheck this option so the Blue Screen (crash screen) shows up. Often the BS
contains relevant information about the crash. You need to note this info
(abcd.dll) for example as well as the (0x1e) error code for example.

To change your settings to show Blue Screen:
Start > Run and enter sysdm.cpl
Advanced tab
Under startup and recovery click on settings
Uncheck automatically restart
OK
OK

Went in and had a look, and it's ALREADY unchecked.

So this looks like a different problem. Thanks though.

Look in event viewer (eventvwr.msc from Run command) for entries under
Application and System corresponding to the time when the restart happens.
Entries such as Information, Error or Warning.

Else use msconfig > services tab > check hide all MS services.
For the services which remain uncheck each one at a time or if you have
lots, 3 or 4 at a time. Reboot and use your computer as usual.
If the issue does not occur, then you've narrowed it down to this 1 service
or group of services which you unchecked.
Repeat as necessary.

I couldn't find anything at all of consequence in event viewer, which seems
very strange.

Anyway, I did as you suggested in msconfig, and the only non-MS service was
for my nvidia card. I disabled it, rebooted, and ran into the same issue.

Thanks anyway.

Sorry it didn't work, Kyle.

Okay, I figured out the reboot problem.

My computer's rebooting because of a problem with Macromedia Flash files.
The crashes during installs and downloads were just co-incidences, as i must
have been on a website with flash files at the time.

Now, the problem is that I can't find a solution to this problem anywhere.
The only reference to it that I've found is in a forum post here
and the solution that worked for THAT GUY doesn't seem to work for me.

Any tips?

Try the following command on the Start-Run line:
SFC /SCANNOW
Have your XP CD handy to install for reference.

This will replace any missing or corrupt file.

I checked Adobe's forum and some posters there report browser crashes or
flash player crashes on sites with flash content like You Tube. Here's a
link:

While you're there, you may want to inquire about your issue at that forum
for better results.
