Hi all,

I want to install Windows XP on external USB HD. I would want to know
if that is possible? And will the installation bind my USB to the
particular computer which I used to install Windows on it?

In detail :-

I do not have my personal computer. I get access to my friend's
computer at times. But I want to create my own hard drive. I was
planning to buy one of the available external USB HDs and install
Windows on it. So my first question is that is such an installation
possible? And if yes, will that installation bind my HD to the computer
I used to install Windows.

Thanks in advance

XP will not install on an external USB or Firewire drive. Microsoft
does not allow it.

No, I'm sorry but XP cannot be installed on or run from an external hard
drive. Look into one of the portable Linux distros instead.

Windows XP can only be installed on an "internal" hard drive.

Namita:
As Carey & others have informed you, cannot *directly* install the XP
operating system onto a USB external hard drive. It is not terribly clear
what your ultimate objective is here when you say "I want to create my own
hard drive." But there is a way (in effect) to install the XP OS onto an
external HDD.

After you install the OS on your internal HDD, you can "clone" the contents
of that drive to the external drive through the use of a disk imaging
program. So that the external HDD will be a copy of your day-to-day working
HDD. I don't know if that would be of any use to you. Bear in mind that, as
you have heard, the USB external HDD containing the XP operating system
would *not* be bootable under these circumstances.

If all you want to do is create a portable drive to store your personal
files to take with you to use with your friend's machine when you visit,
YES, that will work.

Yes, it won't work!
