Windows not remembering passwords

I value very highly the ability of Windows XP to remember
usernames and passwords. But lately it has failed to
retain any, though I check the "remember this password"
feature when I enter username and password.

I first noticed it after I had asked Windows to delete
the username/password for a credit card (I followed
instructions in doing this; bring up the username with
autocomplete, then right-click and choose "delete"). I
was not able to get Windows to remember the new
username/password that was to replace the old one. But in
five or six other circumstances, I have also noticed that
it is not retaining brand new usernames/passwords,
including those on forms that I am using for the first
time.

Once before I deleted temporary internet files, and lost
all the memorized usernames/passwords. I am strongly
tempted to delete the files again, in hopes that this
would reset all the defaults, and then I could re-input
everything. But I don't want to go through a lot of work
like this if it will not solve the problem. Do you have
any advice for me?
Thanks
