Windows Mobile 2005 and Vista

Hi,

How come, I can't sync contacts/calendar/files with my Windows Mobile 2005
device
with the new Mobile Device Center like I was able to do with ActiveSync?

I remember this was a bug when RC2 was introduced,
but didn't they fix it? Or doesn't Microsoft think "non-business" users
should
be allowed to sync like they have always done using ActiveSync ?

All it allows me to sync is media with Media Player, which I don't even use.

You have to download the mobile centre from MS which I assume you have. Now
uninstall Activesync entirely and if you have mobile centre already in,
uninstall it as well. Now install it again. Plug your PDA in and it will
work at that point. Took me a lot of fiddling around to find that on my own
machine. Works cable OK but wont bluetooth connect.

Thank you for your replies,
but really didn't I mention ?

I don't have ActiveSync installed, I'm not using any BETA software
I bought an official license and am using the release version of Vista.

Oh my go this is insane.
So let me get this right, I installed Vista, I get Mobile Device Center on
the control panel... but this isn't really Mobile Device Center,
it's a freaking placeholder.... But you know this kind of blunder is the
kind of blunder nobody cares about.... you know why ?
Because it's Microsoft, and we all just take whatever Microsoft throws at
us.

Anyway it works right now... thnx...

No, it's not a 'placeholder'--it works just fine with millions of portable
media devices. Just not with your PDA how you would like.
Did Active Sync come pre-installed on your previous version of Windows?
No, it came with your device or you had to search for it, download it, and
install it.
You could just as easily blame the manufacturer of your handheld device for
not providing you with the necessary updates--after all, they must have
known you would have installed Vista by now, right?
Would it have been nice to get a popup prompt to download the PDA-enabled
WMDC when you first plugged in?
Yes, it would have.
Did this happen on previous Windows versions? No, it did not. So nothing has
changed along those lines.
I'm sure if the 'full' WMDC came pre-installed on Vista, with an icon on the
desktop, an equal number of people would be posting:
"What the hell is that? I don't need that! How do I get rid of it? MICROSOFT
BLOAT!"

Oh please, let's not start another one of Those Threads, eh?

But that's just it, it DID come preinstalled with my Vista,
and I'm not just talking about a single Mobile 2005 device,
we have devices from various brands (HP, HTC, QTEK, Mio) all 2005.

And what I installed was an update of WMDC to get it working.
The WMDC team reported this as a bug in RC2 but didn't have time to fix it
before the vista release.
Granted, it's probably a "suit" vs "developer" program at Microsoft, but
they could have solved
this by including the update in windows update.

If WMDC wasn't on my computer in the first place, it would have been logical
to download
and install it, but since it was already there I (and many others I've
talked to) assumed
it works.

The point is, people accept this kind of behaviour from Microsoft because
they have to.

It isnt THE Mobile Device Centre. It is the Sync thing. The MDC has to be
downloaded separately ans yes I am with you. I had no idea that was the
problem until someone told me. I have Vista Business and suddenly my PDA
couldnt sync because Activesync was actively BLOCKED by Vista and the Sync
thing didnt do a thing nor did my PDA even get noticed by Vista. I
downloaded the program and installed it and that didnt change a thing. So I
uninstalled and installed Activesync then the MDC and nothing. I uninstalled
Ativesync and nothing. Uninstalled MDC and installed it again and away it
went but nothing makes it Bluetooth sync.

One thing YOU forget - while you are right that the maker of the PDA didnt
say anything in MY case (not sure about the OP), Microsoft actively BLOCKED
activesync with Vista and also said nothing. So, for my part I had XP Pro
and a working Activesync and now Vista Business, a blocked Activesync and
nothing from Microsoft or the PDA maker about anything at all. So, Microsoft
actually went one place further in making this a mess. I went to look for a
newer Activesync and nothing at that site, when I looked, said a thing about
going to MDC.

So, could MS have actually said at the Activesync section of their web site
"Vista users HAVE to uninstall Activesync and go here (with link) to work
with their PDAs"? They sure could have instead of leaving us blind. I had no
idea MDC even existed yet they killed off Activesync. Not helpful.

What kind of device are you using? I know some Motorola Q users are
having this same problem, and I know at least a few have a recent
update to their phone that was released by Motorola that may be
causing the problems. I'm using a Q as well, but I didn't use the
update, and my sync functions are working great in Vista.
