Windows Messenger with Exchange 2003?

Is it true that Exchange 2003 does not support Windows Messenger?

If so, then what is the messenger service in Exchange for?

I'm really confused.

This is correct, because the Exchange IM Service was removed from Exchange 2003; it is
however, part of Exchange 2000.
