Windows Messenger Voice disconnects

Andrew

Our problem existed before and since Sp.2. The voice connection disconnects
although we can still type instant messages and file transfer continues
through the period of disconnection. When the disconnection occurs we can
immediately remake the connection.
What is the cause of this voice disconnection?

Jonathan,
I take it that, because a lack of replies on this post, this is a not a
defect of the Instant Messenger Voice program but is a normal quirk of Voice
operation?

Greetings Andrew,

Actually it's not normal at all, but there are millions of explanations that could be made on
this (most of which have no real solution); my only real solution would be is if you're
utilizing some type of router to make sure you have the latest firmware from the hardware
manufacturer.

Thank you for your time Jonathan, neither of us has a router. My connection
is directly onto an ADSL circuit and the distant contact is also directly
onto an ADSL circuit.
I get the same results if I use my other computer connected to the ADSL
line, so it would appear that it might not be my computer.
Another friend has reported similar symptoms when talking to his contacts,
he uses a broadband direct cable connection (part of TV Distribution Cable )
to his ISP.
I was always under the impression that Instant Messenger was a direct
PC-to-PC connection and as such if the File Transfer is present and the
Typing Page is operative then the Voice should also be operating normally.
As I said previously, the connection between the computers is not lost when
the Voice disconnects because a "File Transfer" was recently in progress
when the voice connection was broken but the transfer continued unabated.

If you have ADSL, check with your supplier and ask if you happen to have a
NAT modem. If so, then that is the problem.

Joel,
Will the Network Address Translation (NAT) Modem be my "Alcatel 1000 ADSL
Modem" mounted here on the wall or at the ISP location?

It is there on the wall; however, it probably was supplied by the ADSL
provider and they are the ones who will know if it is or not. It is, for
some reason no one know why, but most DSL and ADSL providers use those type
of modems and they cause problems. Just goes to show that the telephone
people are not all that smart.
