Windows messenger/net.passport

Christopher

Everytime I connect to the internet through my isp(Juno),
it logs me in Windows Messenger(net.passport). I do not
use windows messenger. I even removed it from Windows
components(add/delete programs). When I sign into MSN
messenger I get a message'You have been singed out of
Windows Messenger because you signed in at another
location'. Sometimes one family member is logged on
Windows Messenger while I am logged on to MSN Messenger.
We all use the same and only pc. I would like to prevent
Windows messenger from connecting when I go on line. I
only want to be connected when I sign onto MSN messenger.
Is there some way to prevent net.passport from signing me
in Windows messenger(which I thought I removed, but still
shows up)? Thank you.

Greetings Christopher,

Firstly, you can stop Windows Messenger from loading completely with Windows, which should
prevent it from logging you in. To do so, run Windows Messenger by clicking Start, then All
Programs, then Windows Messenger, click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab,
uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts'
(will depend on the version of Windows Messenger you have installed) and click OK. Now,
right-click on the Windows Messenger icon in the notification area/system tray (by the
clock), and choose Exit.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added an "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause some
of this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon
in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

I cannot access Windowes messenger because I removed it
through add/delete windows components. But if it is
removed why does it still work? Reading a post by you on
the 26,I went into user accounts and
removed 'Passport.Net\* (Passport)'. Should this work?

Hi Chris,

My apologies -- click Start, then Run, and enter "msmsgs" and click OK. That should bring it
up.

Actually you didn't really remove Windows Messenger, you just removed its shortcut. Hence,
why it's still logging on.

Yes, removing the Passport.Net\* entry will fix the problem, but it also will remove your
saved password in MSN Messenger, and you'll manually need to type in your login/password to
sign-in.

Windows Messenger still comes up automaticly. I read a
post that you wrote to run 'msiexec.exe /x {ABEB838C-A1A7-
4C5D-B7E1-8B4314B10138}' and this will remove Windows
messenger. If I run this will it remove Windows Messenger
only? I want to keep MSN Messenger. Will this finally
accomplish my goal of having only one messenger running?
Thanks for all your help!

Hi Chris,

You can use this method to uninstall Windows Messenger 5, but if you do features like Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will no longer work. If you don't use them,
there's no harm in uninstalling it (and you can reinstall it at any time).

As well, if you're using Windows Messenger 4.x, to uninstall, close down Messenger if it's
running (right click the messenger icon in the
notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run
and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,
