I thought I'd give webcams a go now that we finally have DSL. I bought a
Logitech Quickcam. I decided to see if I could set the webcam up to display
material I want my sister to see 2000 miles from here. She has no webcam but
does have DSL. The chat facility works fine, but when I went to connect the
webcam, I got a msg to the effect that it could not connect. This is
probably a firewall issue. Looking at the XP firewall Exceptions tab, I see
that Win Msgr is on the list. I would guess the same is true at her end. Is
there a port or maybe the Logitech program itself that needs be on the
exception list? Perhaps WM has a preferences list for webcams that needs
tuning? Any other comments on trying to use WM with webcams?

Try Yahoo Messenger.

Alias

You need MSN Messenger or Live Messenger for video.

The new version of yahoo messenger allows for phone calls from computer to
computer and if web cam exists with video and include a mic you now have a
video phone, pretty cool, and very easy to get working.

The older versions had those features. The new one, however, seems more
reliable and stable than the previous versions.

'Course, there's always NetMeeting that you can access with XP by using
Start > Run > conf > Enter.

I installed YM without a hitch and had only a minor hitch getting the webcam
to work. If one has the logitech window displaying an image, YM won't
broadcast. It gives some odd msg that seems unrelated to the real problem.
However, one that was realized, it worked just fine. That may have been the
WM problem too, but the next paragraph why it's likely a bad choice anyway.

I talked to a young fellow at Staples today where I had bought the camera a
few days ago. He seemed to know quite a bit about various messenger
programs, and said forget WM. He considered it vulnerable to attack. He
definitely recommended YM as a a good choice, and thought well of MSN
Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. Now my question is ...

How do I uninstall Windows Messenger? I see no entry for it in the Control
Panel Add/Remove list.

There are probably other choices, but for the moment I'm happy with YM.
Nevertheless, it seems in both cases they are a bit loose on how-to-use-it
documentation. It's fairly easy to see how they work, but there are some
aspects of them that need explanation for the uninitated. Perhaps they make
money selling classes to those people.
