windows media player! please help!

i am having major difficulties with windows media player, in that it simply will not open. every time i try to open it, it makes that ding/bell sound (sorry, i don't know the technical term) immediately and doesn't open. i assumed that maybe my recently installed realplayer had somehow automatically disabled windows media player, so i went as far as uninstalling the whole program. so i basically lost the capability to play realplayer files, and windows media player STILL doesn't work. i even did a system restore to a month ago, when it worked, but to no avail. i really need windows media player for many files and it is very important that i can use it. if anybody could tell me how to set the automatic options for media, or just how to get it to open (i've already tried the control panel), i would greatly appreciate it! thanks in advance.

If WMP doesn't open when you click on the icon or the WMP icon has changed
it is likely being caused by Malware on your system. There are more than a
few programs that will help you get rid of this. Below are some options for
you to try.

This might also cause WMP to launch when you log in or turn on your PC.

PestPatrol

CWShredder

Housecall AntiVirus

After you get all of the malware removed then you will want to reinstall
Windows Media Player over itself. Depending on how WMP was installed on
your machine you may already have the installer. If you do it is located in
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Installer. The file name of the
installer is "mpsetupxp.exe"

If you don't see the folder then run C:\Program Files\Windows Media
Player\setup_wm.exe and that will re-download the installer and install it.

Just something to add. I was having the very same problem.
Even after running my anti virus and spyware programs.
Look in C:/Windows for a mrhop.dll file. You will have to
rename it to be able to delte it. I renamed it xxxx.dll
then log off and back on and delete it. Once I did that
then I was able to reinstall WMP9 over itself and all is
well again.
