Windows Media Player opens all file types

This is XP Home edition.

Windows Media Player tries to open all files types. Even clicking on
User Accounts in Admin Tools launches WMP and lists the files rundll32
in the "play list"

I went to the following site for reg fixes:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

I could only apply these fixes while in Safe Mode. Out of safe mode I
get the error : "Cannot import XXX Error Accessing the registry" XXX
is the reg fix's path.

The user account is an Admin, but I also logged in the Administrator
account in Safe mode and tried to apply the fixes. They didn't work,
however.

Two notes: 1) I can not log on as Administrator after a normal boot.
Some sort of protection for XP Home?

2) Internet Explorer works normally in that WMP doesn't try to open
it.

Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks for your help!!

Bump doesn't work here. You need to be patient and give it 24-48 hrs.
