Windows Media Player & DVD playback problem since installing Catalyst 6.1

Hi

I have an AIW8500DV running under XP Pro (sp2).

Since installing Catalyst 6.1 drivers, Windows Media Player can no longer
play WMV files and DVD's play sluggishly.

I've downloaded and reinstalled Windows Media Player but still the same
problem.

I'm at a loss how to fix this.

Has anyone else reported the same problem?

Thanks for any info.

Windows media player is the worst utility to read DVD.
On my configuration (8500DV) It takes more than 95% of AMD 1800+ processor
to read a DVD since ATI DVD player takes only 5% and Cyberlink power DVD
less than 10 %.
Also the best drivers for the 8500DV card seams to be catalyst 5.4 with MMC
9.061., more recent drivers do not take care of the old 8500DV card and give
less good results.

Did you uninstall the old ATI before installing the new ones?
Did you try turning off/on WMV acceleration in the ATI settings? (probably
need a reboot after).

Cat 6.2 are out, have you tried those?

I am using Cat 6.1 with a 9800 pro, and the only problem I have is a text
file called "dxva_sig" is created whenever I play WMV files.

I assume you have the latest DirectX.

Thanks for replying Olivier.

The reason I upgraded to 6.1 was becuase my system was forever crashing and
the MS error reporting always said it was the video graphics driver.

Actually I rarely watch a DVD for more than a few minutes on my PC. Its only
for occasional use to check that a DVD Ive created plays back and navigates
OK.

DVD's played back fine on Windows Media Player until I upgraded the drivers!

If I cant get this to work I may go back to 5.4 as you suggest.

Is it still possible to get MMC 9.061?

Hi abc

Thanks for replying.

Yes I used the Driver Cleaner Pro tool to remove all things ATI prior to
installing 6.1.

I'm using DX9c.

Interesting that you mention WMV acceleration. I cant seem to find any
adjustment for it within Catalyst Control Panel.

I searched the help file for WMV (nothing found!) then manually checking I
found

Enable Windows Media Settings
a.. Expand Video in Advanced View.
b.. Click All Settings.
c.. Scroll to Windows Media Settings.
d.. Click Windows Media Video Acceleration.

But in my advanced view I dont see "ALL SETTINGS" I just see "Standard
Settings" and the video presets are greyed out so there's nothing for me to
adjust there.

So I'm stumped!

Any ideas why its like that?

Thanks

Ian
