Windows Media Player 9 and 10 keeps crashing on internet

When I use MP 9 or 10, it crashes as I am viewing or listining from the
internet. I am using it through either IE or Mozilla Fox. Both ways crash. I
am running XP Pro and have installed SP2.

Any suggestions?

Any error messages? Any entries in the Event Viewer that may point to the
cause of the problem?

I get no error messages and do not see any "events" either in applications
or system.

When WMP crashes, it generates a continual high-pitched sound.

Will. I performed a repair install of Windows and reinstalled all updates.
Now I am back to using Media Player 9 and it is still crashing. When it
hangs, it makes a beeping sound I have to restart the computer.

Is there any solution short of a clean installation of XP?
