When capturing video with Windows Media Encoder my mouse sticks & is hard to
use.
Any sugestions appreciated.

Capturing is CPU and ram intensive,
A frozen mouse indicates a conflict
or severe drain on system.
The obvious answer is turn off other running applications during
capture. - All that stuff in system tray - where clock is, these
are running app's.
Some Anti-virus software may attempt to perform a real time
scan on the captured video - This can be a cause.
Next time mouse freezes, hold down together the following keys:
Alt + Ctrl + Del (all on lower row of standard keyboard)
The WindowsTask manager will appear,
There will be a series of tabs. Under "Applications" will be
detailed all app's that are running.
The very bottom row of task manager will detail:
Running Processes and CPU Usage.
If CPU usage is anything above 50% then you PC is under
severe stress, "End Task" on unrequired running apps.

No other programs are running.
As for the task bar te icons don't have a close option.

There most definately is many other app's and processes running,
your PC would not function otherwise

NOT the task Bar, The System Tray - this is the area where the clock is,
Each running (Printer, Scanner, etc) app will place an Icon here
Place cursor on each and RIGHT click, in the menu that appears select
"Exit"/"Close"/"Pause" etc etc
Do NOT disable the clock
DISCONNECT from internet before disabling Anti-virus and firewall,
(Ensure you reactivate both AV and firewall before reconnecting to web.

There are many "hidden" running applications and processes that
maybe causing a conflict with your capture software:

Did you open Windows Task Manager?
What is/was your CPU's usuage in %
Hold down keys: Alt+Ctrl+Del
