Windows Media Center Store Update Manager Constantly Crashing

G

Guest

For two weeks now, every time that I use Windows Vista Ultimate, after 10 to
20 minutes of use, I keep getting an error window saying "Windows Media
Center Store Update Manager has stopped working and was closed". as yet, I
cannot get any information from Microsoft concerning this issue. Anybody
have some info on this?

What information do you have in the Problem Reports and Solutions center for
that error?

Is the file 'GOEC62~1.DLL' on your system? That should be part of the
Google Toolbar, I believe. If you temporarily disable or remove the Google
Toolbar, does the Update Manager stop crashing? It should be easy to
reinstall that toolbar once you've tested that.

Quick question: is WMP working correctly on this system? I imagine it would
be fine, but knowing that detail could shed further light. (I can
potentially deduce that over time, but it's a lot quicker to just ask.)

I am having the exact same problem, and my WMP works fine, but I can't even
start Widows media center, and the same error appears.

I am also having that same problem - WMC Store Update Manager. My vendor is
unable to help other than to suggest a complete OS reinstall (ugh). I do not
have the Google toolbar installed and have tried using system restore but
have not found success.

My Reports and Solutions center reads the same and is copied below.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello,

I was researching for answers to the same problem with the Vista Media
Center, and I came across your posting a few days ago. It took two
calls to Microsoft's tech support, and a few hours of head scratching,
but we (yes, I said we) finally figured out a solution for my desktop
PC, at least.

The short answer is, you're probably better off selecting the "Custom
Install" option when installing Vista on your XP-operating PC.
That'll save your old files in a new folder called "Windows.old" (no
quotes), and then pretty much proceed with an otherwise clean install.

I had been experiencing some guide update issues with the XP Media
Center 2005 before I upgraded to Vista, and the Microsoft tech finally
theorized that somehow the corruption responsible for my XP MCE issues
carried over to my Vista install. He recommended that I try the
Custom Install, and I did. The problem is now gone.

Keep in mind that a lot of your drivers for network adapters, tv tuner
cards, or other hardware and so forth will be uninstalled by this
process, and you'll have to re-obtain them and re-install them, in
many cases. I signed up for DriverAgent.com and was able to make
pretty short work of this. Or directing the Device Manager to search
for drivers in "Windows.old" may do the job.
You may have to change the "view" setting in your window to show
hidden icons or files -- my "windows.old" file was hidden until I did
that.

Hope that info helps.

Thanks Dan, I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

My situation is a little different although the solution may be the same.

My system is a new system - not an upgrade - so the XP legacy issues
wouldn't be a factor.

The vendor suggested a clean install - ugh. At least I have a re-install
partition with all the appropriate drives - I'll just have to re-install
copious amounts of other software.

If any one else has had this issue on a non-upgraded version of Vista - I'd
appreciate hearing from you - especially if you found a solution!

Hello,
I have a new system NOT an upgrade and am having a similar problem, although
media centre only opens for a couple of seconds for me. If you have found a
solution I would really like to know. This is driving me crazy!!!
Thanks.

I have over the weekend had to re-install vista i.e. first to home premium
and then to ultimate. In Home Premium, Media Centre worked well without any
problems. However, when I attempted to run it in Ultimate I recieved the
following error message "windows media centre update manager has stopped
working and will be closed". I have tried it with my firewall etc. off, but
to no avail. I have been unable to locate anything which covers exactly compatible
ground with my error. This thread would appear to be in a similar vein, at least it seems more intouch than the so called assistance I've from Mcst!
I can only assume that a file has been corrupted somehow or other, along the
way. The thing is driving me tp distraction any advice would be gratefully
accepted. I would however ask anyone to bear in mind that my knowledge of
windows in particular and computing in general is on the sketchy side of
basic.
In addition if its any help here is a copy of my error report:
