As Rick suggests its probably that you mail folder are getting full. Best to
open Options from the Tools menu and Advance tab Maintenance button and tick
the Empty on Close box.

Using SpywareBlaster, per chance? Or installed any other software or REG file that adds rogue sites to the "Restricted Sites" list in IE, as a security measure? If so, see this page for a solution:

Just a thought. When do you click on Windows Mail? Right after Vista
starts? Lots of people want to check their mail when they first get on and
the problem MIGHT be clicking on Windows Mail before everyting loads up.

If it takes half a minute for Windows Mail to open eac time, then I agree
that the inbox might be full and maintenance may need to be done.

The inbox is not the problem. My Windows Mail has taken 20-30 seconds to open
from the time of installation, when there were NO messages in the inbox. I
have read posts that also attribute the slowness to a large list of contacts.
This might be an issue when sending something out, but what about the delay
in opening when new mail arrives, or when simply clicking "reply"?

Yes. I tried that last week. The fix installed successfully but made no
difference. As for antivirus programs, I am running Avast, which shouldn't be
a problem.

I have read several times that I should reduce my contact lists, but this
same list caused no problem with Outlook Express--and if I can't keep a list
of e-mail addresses on hand, what good is the e-mail program?

I am at a loss. Both Windows Mail and Outlook are running very slow and
crippling my productivity. Worse, while Outlook takes its time about sending
out an e-mail, it freezes all my other functions so I can't do anything
else--not even compose another e-mail--while waiting.
