My windows mail is not responding whenever I attempt to look at attachments.
As long as I do not look at the attachment the program behaves normally.
However whenever I attempt to open an attachment the program becomes
unresponsive and has to be closed. I have re-booted the computer at least
five times. I also attempted a system restore however that failed because of
an unknown error. (that is what it said) I feel like I am heading toward a
complete re format. Any help would be appreciated. BTW this all began about a
week ago, and the computer is a two month old Dell XPS one running on VISTA

Can you click on the paperclip indicating an attachment, read the file name,
and
tell us the part of the file name starting with the last period?

Also, what if any antivirus programs do you have?

Which antivirus are you running? Some are not compatible with
Windows Mail, and will cause assorted problems after a period of time.

I am using the latest version of Norton Anti Virus which was pre loaded at purchase. The computer is about two months old and this issue did not occur in the first month or so.

After the name of the attachment it is .xls I have the latests version of Norton Anti virus.

Norton and McAfee cause considerable problems in Windows Mail.

..xls is an Excel spreadsheet and WinMail is probably looking for a program
to open the file. It would probably return in a few minutes if you didn't
close it.

I believe the program needed to read .xls files is Microsoft
Office Excel. Do you have it installed?

Most versions of the Norton antivirus programs cause problems
in Windows Mail, but slowly enough they often take months to
show up. Just disabling then is not enough; you have to
uninstall them to stop them from creating new problems.
You then often need to run this program to clean up what
the uninstall left behind:

You may even have to remove your mail account under
Windows Mail, then restart Windows Mail and create
the account again.

If this fixes your problem, you may want a replacement
antivirus program. Avoid the McAfee and Trend
antivirus programs - they also cause problems in
Windows Mail. I recommend you download and
install either the avast! or the AVG antivirus program,
and for either one do a custom install where you tell it
to leave out the part that scans email.
