Windows Mail - no support for http - e.g. hotmail? Why did they get rid of Outlook Express

Outlook express supported HTTP no problem. Why did they get rid of it if
they didn't include a suitable upgrade in Vista? If they gave outlook out
for free that would be one thing but here they left their own users out
unless there is some other program in Vista (short of IE web mail) that I'm
missing.

Nope. you're missing nothing.

You can have the http mail in windows mail if you are an office live member
or, Outlook supports Office Live accounts also.

But there's no more free hotmail AND free http mail in Outlook or windows
mail.

Sign up for an office live account and you can have your cake and eat it
too! :)

I ran the free bee in Vista RC2 with no problems on hotmail. Have as yet
gotten the time to get the upgrade installed on my testing box.

No. You cannot access Hotmail with Windows Mail, whether your have a paid
account or not.

Yes there is. If you have an old legacy account, over x years old, you can
still use Outlook (or Thunderbird) to access your Hotmail. I have two such
accounts.

Rubbish.

There is no support for Hotmail in Windows Mail, and I can't understand it
either. I believe that Thunderbird can access Hotmail (you might need an
addon). There is also 'Windows Live Mail Desktop', which is another program
you can download. This can run on Vista or XP, RSS support, an awful
skinned interface and adverts, but it supports Hotmail.

"awful" for that mostrocity is an understatment!!!

its certainly designed by the same dorks that designed the vista interface

Frank,
I use (Vista) Windows Mail and like it -- except for the Hotmail thing.
Question: Can I install WLMD and still use Windows Mail, or will WLMD nuke
WM? I'd like to use both, I guess. Comments?
Note: as the other person wrote, there is no logical reason that Microsoft
disallowed HTTP mail on Windows Mail, especially now that they're allowing
it for WLMD. What am I missing??

I won't use it for the same reason I won't use Live Messenger. I don't
need another source of useless advertising.

Yes, you can run both. My copy of WLMD is on Vista and I mainly use WinMail
on that machine.

What you are missing is all the wonderful advertisements.

If you are a MSN or Hotmail Plus paying customer, you won't see ads and only
free accounts will see it - which is a fair game, I think.

But to not support HTTP and force customers including subscribers to use
WLMD for HTTP is not a good move.

My solution - cancel MSN premium subscription. I can make my life easier
without following their rules :)

Depending on whether you used hotmail with POP access or not you can work
around it. If you were HTML only, then you can't. If you have POP access
to hotmail put in a bogus address during the setup wizard, complete the
wizard and then go into the account and change the settings.

Or, as others have suggested, live mail desktop works fine.
