If Spybot Search and Destroy or similar is present that has an Immunization
function which adds a few thousand sites to the restricted zone(Windows Mail
operates by default as it should in the Restricted Zone) use the Spybot
Immunize/Undo function and test if it has a positive impact.(compliments of
R.Rogers in the windows.vista.general newsgroup)
- If so, you'll need to decide if you wish to operate with Immunization
on or off.

Another option, and I can't tell why it works, try opening the Windows
Calendar(from within Windows Mail(Tools/Windows Calendar or Control-Shift-L)
and test to see if it has a positive impact on restoring the speed.

Other more common email client issues
- email scanning by an AV or other application
i.e. Disable both incoming and outgoing is the general rule.

Hi

I found this page after searching everywhere for some information, my
Windows Mail was also slow at opening, previewing and deleting mail.
I tried Winston's idea of opening Windows Calendar, it worked but I did'nt
want to open the calendar everytime I checked my mail.
I uninstalled update *KB931768* and used the undo in Spybot - Search &
Destroy and then tried Windows Mail, everything ran smoothly. I tried to
re-immunize but was unable to (it would'nt respond) so I reinstalled Spybot
and immunized, I checked Windows Mail again and it still runs fine. I am now
without update *KB931768* but am happy with Windows Mail.

Thanks for the advice folks, much appreciated.

Just my opinion, but you'd probably be better off by installing the
KB931768 update and not using the Immunize option in Spybot.

I reinstalled update *KB931768* and found that Windows Mail became unresponsive once again so I turned off immunization in S&D and this led to Windows Mail responding at normal speed. It seems like the update and immunization turned on do not work well together. Does this situation now mean that Spybot - Search & Destroy is of no use on my PC.

Not at all.
"Immunization" is just one layer of defense that Spybot S&D uses.
What it actually does: Spybot adds the URLs of thousands of known 'bad'
websites to the Restricted Sites list in Internet Explorer. Microsoft's position is
that the Restricted Sites list was never meant to be used in such a massive fashion.
