Windows Mail is not your default mail client

Kevin

Just after I uninstalled an older version of Outlook (which I do not use
anyway) I started getting the error message about how "the default mail
client is not installed properly" and now I am pestered by the popup
informing me that Windows Mail is not my default mail client.

Of course, I have tried to fix that by telling Windows Vista Home Premium
that, yes, dammit, it is so my default mail client. Windows refuses to
listen to me about that.

I removed all the items in the Mail folder per some instructions off the
Microsoft Support site hoping that, as the article promised, Mail would fix
itself by reinstalling those items and my problem would be fixed. Not a
chance.

Does anyone have some ideas?

What are the settings for Windows Mail in Start Menu > Default Programs (or
Control Panel [Classic view] > Default Programs)?

OK.

Go to Control Panel > Default Programs and click the bottom link (Set program
access and computer defaults") and approve the UAC prompt. Expand the Custom
section and under "Choose a default e-mail program", tick Windows Mail and check
the "Enable access to this program" checkbox. Click OK.

Then go back to the "Set your default programs" link (top), highlight Windows
Mail and click the top green arrow at the bottom of the window to set Windows
Mail to have all it's defaults. Click OK.

That's not good.
Frankly, the easiest way to fix your problem is to upgrade to WLM:

There is no option for Windows Mail there. I have already checked this
solution in my own troubleshooting efforts. That, apparently, is the
problem. Windows Mail does not show up as a mail client in Set Program
Access and Computer Defaults.

Damn, that's a real pain in the arse.

Looks like Gary's suggestion of switching to Windows Live Mail is the best
(perhaps only) solution.

You could also try System File Checker (if you haven't already) by running sfc
/scannow from an "elevated" (Run as Administrator) Command Prompt.
