how do I remove the icon of an envelope with a purple arrow pointing left
from all of the messages in my inbox

That icon is to tell that you have replied to that email.
Are you saying that you get that icon even if you did not reply to that message?

Yes that is correct the icon shopes against all of my received emails

I opened "View" and selected 'Layout' and then in Windows Layout Properties
selected Customise toolbar Then I removed the icon for 'Reply' and 'Reply
all' from the 'current toolbar buttons' box and closed the box ..returned to
Layout Properties and clicked 'Apply' then OK
The Icon still shows against all of my emails in the inbox

I am perplexed how this occurred and how to fix it
anyway thanks for replying and hope you can suggest where I go from here

Check under the menu "Tools" - "Options" - "Receipts"
Is the box checked "always send a read receipt"?
 
You cannot remove the icons next to the message subjects in the Subjects
column.
