Windows Mail "forgets" POP3-passwords (Vista Home Premium 32-bit)

Hi there,

I am having a problem which obviously occured in recent Windows / Outlook
Express versions before, since Microsoft Knowledge Base 290684 ("Save
password setting not retained in Outlook or Outlook Express") deals with the
problem.

Microsoft suggests to delete a key from Window's registry. Unfortunately
there is no instruction on how to delete the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider
on a Vista Home Premium system.

I tried the instructions for Win-XP, but it did not work out. When I try to
delete the key, Vista keeps insisting that
"S-1-5-21-124525095-708259637-1543119021-16701 cannot be erased. Error on
deleting the key" (roughly translated from german ;-)

Any ideas or links on how to solve this problem?

TIA & greetings from Austria,
Andy

Did you already try deleting the problematic email account and
creating it anew from start?

Hi,
Did you already try deleting the problematic email account and
creating it anew from start?

Yes, I did try that too - no effect.

But!...

Yesterday when I posted the original message I had to enter
the email-account-password again. I don't know why and
I don't know how, but since that point it seems to work
properly again. Funny thing about it is, that I did NOT
change anything at that point. It's a miracle to me why
Windows Mail works now, but as a matter of fact it does.

Anyway, thank you for trying to help.

Greez,
Andy

Are you using either McAfee or Norton antivirus?
Overly intrusive antivirus programs are a known cause of
corrupting saved passwords.
Read and heed http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
If you have McAfee or Norton antivirus, uninstall it.
Then install a non-intrusive antivirus program such as the free Avast.
Whichever new antivirus program you select, be sure to disable
its email scanning option.
