This is the error message I receive when receiving or sending mail. I
downloaded and installed windows update 941090 but it did not help.
Previously, I received mail without any problems.

Account: 'ride.ri.net', Server: 'ride.ri.net', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR Syntax error', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error:
0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

I am curious why you would have installed the KB941090 fix
since it has no bearing on the symptoms you are experiencing?

As for your error message, there are two likely possibilities.
First, go to Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties,
Server, make sure the box for "Log on using Secure Password
Authentication" is not checked.
If that was not applicable, then you may be having a problem
with interference from your antivirus program.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
