When I click on any type of attachment, windows mail stops working and then
restarts. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

That type of problem can be caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Interesting! I have a similar problem with both Windows Mail and Windows Live
Mail crashing/restarting when the second file attachment is opened in any
session. Turning off Norton (NAV/NIP 2007) email scanning makes no
difference. This issue has only appeared for me in the last few weeks. This
sort of issue has also started to being posted on various web sites/help
forums only very recently.

I have a second PC with very similar spec which does not exhibit the same
issues. Only obvious difference is it uses MS OneCare in place of NAV/NIP
2007 (however other are reporting same issue with other AV software installed
so I suspect that AV is at worst only part of the problem).

Any ideas before I ditch NAV 2007 completely???

Thanks Gary!

Simply un-installing Norton (2007) did the trick - email attachments now
open OK in Windows Mail.

I ran the Norton un-install tool as well - just to be sure - and replaced
Norton with MS OneCare as I had a spare licence - this also works fine.
Symantec suggested their free Norton 2009 download (www.norton.com/nis09)
might solve the problem, but with no certainty of being able to retrieve my
short remaining subscription I decided to cut my losses on Norton. Others
wanting to keep Norton might find this useful?????

You're very welcome. Thanks for reporting back.
Hopefully those who refuse to believe that Norton can cause this
type of problem will take your experience for a lesson.
