Apart from being completely miffed at the timne it has taken to get to the
stage where I can post a question, please can anyone advise me how to open a
'Contact' so that I can edit it. I do the double clicxk thing and the
contact details seem to flash up on screen then disppear in an instant, so I
don't have time to do the edit. If I right click and chose edit, the same
thing happens. Incidentatlly, it took me several goes to open up this
'question' box from the tool bar. Is that connected maybe?

See if it helps to start Windows Mail, then click on Tools, then Windows
Contacts, then right click in the open space below the right end of the
toolbar in the Contacts window, then click on Customize This Folder,
then the triangle to the right of the folder type, then Contacts, then
Apply,
then OK, then the contact you want to edit, then Edit.

If that doesn't help, what if any antivirus programs do you have, and have
you ever had a Norton or McAfee antivirus program om that computer?
Some of the popular antivirus programs tend to cause assorted problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

Thanks Robert, but there was no triangle to the right of the folder type
under the 'General' tab. Am I looking in the right place? Under the
'customize' tab, there is a folder type to use as a templete 'Contacts' that
has a trianlge, with a box to click to 'also apply this template to all
subfolder', but when I ticked that, and OK-ed, I was still unable to open the
contact to edit. The 'Apply' option at the bottom of the 'customize' tab is
not clickable (not the technical term I know, but with the colour scheme in
Vista, I can't say it is 'greyed out'). Any other ideas?

Thanks

Are you sure you are in the Contacts window when you right-click on
the white empty space? There should not be any tabs.

If I bring up contacts, then highlight the one I want to edit, a toolbar
opens up right above the list. On the right side of that toolbar it says
"edit", click on it and Mail brings up the old properties window from OE.

I have exactly the same problem. In Explorer contacts I can't edit the
contact. WHen I double click the contact it jsut flashes very quickly and
then nothing. Have tried everything all of you have suggested to no avail.
Am new to Vista and Windows Mail - I have been using MS Oultook (not
Express). I have Norton on my computer. How do I get around these issues?

That type of problem is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly intrusive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
