All of a sudden when I try to open attachments I get "The Command Failed To
Execute" I hate Vista it gets worse and worse. They must have expected big
problems as they uped their charges for help and when it crashes it now says
do you want to return to your orginial site? Now this crap and I have yet to
every get any help out of this site! Thanks

I'd bet that you have recently installed IE8.

If so: Welcome to the Club! <eg>

There is a "known" problem which affects many systems (not the majority
though) after the install of IE8.
There is no fix so far - except uninstalling IE8.

The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other files types
opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

I have the same problem with Vista. Only solution is to uninstall IE8 to
IE7. However, in Windows XP and IE8, it is not a problem. Works fine on my
desktop.

Yes, the bug only appears with WinMail and no other mail client.
But it's caused by the mere existence if IE8.

Is there any explanation why MICROSOFT has not fixed this problem?

I have a new Dell computer with VISTA & have the same problem except it is
intermittent - attachments open OK one day & not the next.

Yes, the problem only appears with WinMail and therefore is not an issue
under XP.
As an alternative: Didn't you try my workaround?
I for one can live with the shortcoming of having to save JPG and TXT
files first.

No, there no reactions from MS so far. I doubt that the relevant persons
in power even know about the bug.

Which type of attachments do have troubles with?

Microsoft only pays attention when it affects millions of users. :-(
So far only a small percentage of Vista IE8 users are affected.
Microsoft would advise you to upgrade to Windows Live Mail,
since it superseded Windows Mail since about Feb. 2007.

I am not sure which attachments will not open - but I can save them to my
documents & then open them . How do you identify the type of attacment?

Just try it out ;-)
Send some mails with some attachments to yourself.
but I can save them to my documents & then open them .

That's just normal.
How do you identify the type of attachment? --

One of the easiest things <g>:
Just click on the attachment icon (paperclip) and you'll see the
filename (incl. the extension) or open the mail (you'll see the filename
+ file-type icon in the attachment field.

You can look at the file extension if your PC is configured to show file
extensions. Otherwise you can tell by which program opens them
outside of Windows Mail. For example, if Microsoft Word opens,
then it was a .DOC file.

There's some indication that MSN Explorer 9.6 has the same
problem with attachments after installing IE8.
There were a number of posts about this in the newsgroup
microsoft.public.msn.discussion

Shall I now shout "Grrrreat!!" ?? <bg>.
I think that chances for investigations on the side of MS will be better
if another products of theirs is affected.

Thanks for the pointer!
I saw a number if postings there a longer while ago. But was reported
seemed to be quite different, so I did not monitor this group. But I
will check things there the other day.

Thanks again
