windows mail attachments

since I changed from xp with outlook express to vista with windows mail I
cannot open .doc attachments. when I attempt to open them, I get computer
language documents rather than plain english. other than saving to a word
file, is there a command I can use to reset my email preferences so my
attachments open as ordinary readable documents.

Do you have Word installed? Which version?
When you save the attachment, can you open it by
double-clicking on the saved file?

Word 2007 is installed (office 2007 is installed)
if I save the attachement and double click they open in MS word correctly

Have you checked your settings for attachment handling?
Go to Tools, Options, Security, uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."
Also, it may help if you select Internet zone instead of Restricted Sites zone.

I have tried unchecking "do not allow attachments", and tried internet zone,
but neither work. I had no trouble until about a week ago. Strange.......

I don't see a problem description in this thread from a "Marie".

Save an attachment, right click, select "Open With", browse for the program
to be used, make sure the "Always use this program to open this type of
file" checkbox is checked, and click OK.
