Can anyone tell me how to share a mialbox between Windows Mail and Oulook
Express.
Windows Mail responds by telling me the directory is not empty when I 'm
trying to assign the Outlook Express Mailbox to be used under Windows Mail
as well.
I want to use Windows Mail as well as Outlook Express on the same mialbox.
And I don't want the mail being shared on the pop3 server.
I want to use Outlook Express and Windows Mail simultaneously when using XP
and Vista Beta2.

Short answer - you cannot. In XP, Outlook Express stores its messages in
DBX files. Windows Mail in Vista does not. There is no way to share a
common mail folder between them.

Sorry to hear that.
Have to find a other way to share info.
I 'll try to keep the messages on a pop3 server.

Tnx,

Pieter

In both programs go to Tools | Accounts and double click the account. On
the Advanced tab tell each of them to leave a copy on the server for a
convenient number of days.

WIndows Mail stores the messages as eml files. You can drag those into an
OE folder from Explorer, and they will be incorporated into OE. Similarly
you can save messages from OE as eml files and then drag them into a WinMail
folder to incorporate them into WinMail.

Would OE and WM folder synchronization work - preferably on file change or
such?

I mean to have two separate email folders - for each OE and WM. Next, if I
download email in one of them - say OE - I would like to synchronize
(ignoring the file type) WM email folder with OE email folder and thus not
needing to open the mail with WM on the POP server again.
I understand OE saves in .dbx while WM saves in .eml; however, I also
understood from other posts here (I might have gotten it wrong, though) that
if you paste .eml files in OE folder, OE can open them.

All you have to do to reincorporate the messages from WInMail to OE, is dig
down into the directory tree of folders in Explorer and find the eml files
and then just drag them into an OE folder. The reverse works as well.

I at the moment prefer to download from each system leaving the messages on
the server, rather than having to synchronize the OSs by dragging messages
about, with the exception of the sent items, which I backup and import into
other builds.

I don't leave my Email folders in their default settings... only the length
of the folder address makes me sure that something will go wrong. I just
make an Email folder on another HDD and back it up on another HDD.
That's why I was thinking of synchronizing.
Thx for answering,
Michael

Steve,

I will be soon purchasing a new PC w/ Vista. Does Windows Mail (WM) allow
you to keep for POP3 accounts copy of messages on server after downloading to
WM (via the 'advanced tab') and like Outlook Express you don't have to select
'remove after X days'. (e.g. you only need to check box 'leave copy on
server' but don't need to also check box to 'remove after x days')

That is, if I have a POP3 account, can I set up Windows Mail account to
leave copy on server, and not delete it after a certain numbers of days, and
thus when I chose to delete it, I can on the server (via accessing that email
account on its server)?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. :)

P.S. I was searching for posts abput keeping POP3 emails on server and these
July postings were the main thread

Hi,

Yes. It works identical to OE. I redundantly download my messages on 3
computers (one of which is this Vista one), and I've had no problems with
message retention on the server and associated features.

Thanks Steve!!

Have a great weekend!
