Disconnect the Internet line, does it run ok now?... I'll bet you it does...
You need to enable the XP Firewall, reconect the line and go here for
instructions on how to do it ; (The firewall will also stop the pop-ups)...

It's likely you still have the adware (not a virus) on your system..... go

Look in the Taskmanager for SLMSS.EXE or any other adware program that could
be using up most of the memory, select end process....
Go to
http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/, to download and
install Ad aware 6 Standard Edition and run it now and then to keep your
system free of adware and spyware.....
