Windows Locks out automatically after x minutes

I am currently running an application between 2 XP Pro machines where Machine
B has access to a folder on Machine A. Until recently it worked fine but now
after every reboot the application runs for x minutes (varies between 5 and
25 minutes) and then without warning the computer seems to lock itself. The
machine is not idle (the mouse is being moved around the screen) so it's
nothing to do with the screensaver. I thought it might be due to access
permissions but the program will run fine for up to 25 minutes and then lock
out, so it has access to the folder for some of the time so I think i can
count this option out. Any other ideas? Got me stumped and more an annoyance
than anything else.

I know you mentioned that the screensaver is not the cause , but to me this
sounds exactly like a workstation lock policy.
check that 'Password protect the screen saver' is 'Disabled'.
is disabled both in the local group policies and on the screensaver settings.

Might be wise to think back to what was installed before this issue occurred
, would a system restore fix the issue .etc.

Machine B is on a workgroup (Where the problem of locking occurs) and Machine
A is on a domain. I recently enabled the automatic login feature via "control
userpasswords2" on the workgroup machine. This was done 2 weeks ago and has
been working fine once i entered the correct password when i accessed the
folder. It's only this morning that i found the problem which happened on
another workstation of the same format earlier last week.
How do i change the Local Policy for the Workgroup machine to disable the
password protect function?

Hi Dietmar21,

As you mentioned the one pc is on a domain , maiking policy the likely cause
for the workstation locking itself.

However now it seems you're describing a password prompt when accessing the
files.

If you are indeed getting a password prompt when accessing the share , it
normally means that the workstation machine has no local entry for the
account trying to access the share, and I'm guessing that the password you
enter is an account on the host machine. ( machine B.)

Please note that the local policy object I refer to here may affect your
security.
CLick start -> click run and type GPEDIT.MSC then click ok.

navigate as follows :
computer configuration -> security settings -> local policies -> user rights
assignments.

Check the object "access this computer from the network"
Make sure the everyone group is included here.

Now check :
computer configuration -> security settings -> local policies -> security
options
check that "Network Access : do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM
accounts and shares" is disabled.

Also check that your Guest account is disabled.

This post took a while to type , so if someone else posted the answer alredy
, my bad.

Sorry , please completely ignore my previous post.

Those policies will only apply if you are prompted for a password when
accessing the files... I totally misread Dietmar21's post.

There really shouldn't be any policies set on the workstation pertaining to
the screensaver.

Try this :
1. Right click Desktop, and choose Properties.
2. Choose the Screen Saver Tab, then uncheck the box for either of the
following:
'on resume, password protect' or 'on resume, display welcome screen' .
3. Click Apply, then OK.

If the tickbox is greyed out and ticked then there is a local policy applied
, and you can find it under administrative templates under computer config ,
but that'd only happen if software modified the registry or if this machine
had been on a domain at some stage...
