I just purchased another 512 ram for my son's computer - he already has 512
(yes, it's the right one - wrote down the number from the existing and
verified with 2 different computer people) - PC2700. When booting up the
computer, it locks on the Windows screen. We've checked connections and
everything is snapped in the way it should be. We're running XP.
Suggestions? Running P4, 2.4 ghz. Not sure of brand of mother board and AGP
128 meg Ge Force video card.

Are the memory sticks exactly the same in even brand and serial numbers? XP doesn't tolerate a difference very well.

No, they're not. Didn't know that mattered. He had Kingston in there
before, the new one I got at Fryes startes with an O - don't remember the
name, off hand.

Tom's experience is different to mine - I've always found that XP is
not fussy. Howeever, it's the rest of the hardware that really
matters.

Try booting with one stick in, and then with the other stick in. See
if it boots okay with one stick. Then try again with two.

Sometimes taking a chip out and putting it back again solves the
problem.

If it won't boot up with the single new chip in, take it back. Get a
replacement or your money back. Don't let them try to persuade you
that its software and if they suggest that you reinstall the software,
call loudly for the manager!

Cheers,

Cliff

It is absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:

SiSoft's Sandra

Belarc Advisor

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database
to help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model
computer and/or motherboard.
