Windows Live Mail vs Windows Mail

Hi,

Could someone explain the difference between Windows Live Mail vs Windows
Mail ?

So far I have found out:
- You need to get a Windows Live Id
- Windows Live is full of adverts (but I can live with that I think)
- Windows Live has a subscription cost (I think)
- Windows Live does not have any archive feaures like Outlook
- Not sure what happens if you have an unreliable broadband connection like
me?

Any other info most welcome please?

Make sure you're considering the Windows Live Mail program available at the
site
below, not the other program that used to have that name.

http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

The main differences are that Windows Live Mail can connect to
some email providers that require a HTTP connection, like Hotmail,
but Windows Mail cannot, and Windows Live Mail uses a separate
set of local folders for each email account, but Windows Mail uses
only one set for all email accounts. Also, Microsoft seems to have
stopped providing updates for Windows Mail, and is now doing
their email work mainly for Windows Live Mail.

Windows Live Mail can take over any accounts Windows Mail
can handle.
So far I have found out:
- You need to get a Windows Live Id

Only if you want to use certain email servers, probably including
the one for live.com. Many people use the ones provided by
their internet providers instead, which are usually no extra cost
after you've paid for the internet provider service.
- Windows Live is full of adverts (but I can live with that I think)
- Windows Live has a subscription cost (I think)

Some email providers may, but the Windows Live Mail program
does not.
- Windows Live does not have any archive feaures like Outlook

Windows Live is a family of programs, not just one program. Don't
confuse Windows Live Mail with any of the other Windows Live
programs.
- Not sure what happens if you have an unreliable broadband connection
like
me?

Most email programs tend to have problems with unreliable connections.
Any other info most welcome please?
If you want to find people who already use Windows Live Mail, most of
them have moved over to newsgroup:

microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Joe,

Can I confirm..

2. The version that's on your PC has no adverts at all.
I thought it was online, so how can it be 'on my PC'?

4. You can create save folders on your PC for your mail.
I have had a nightmare with this in Windows mail because although you can
drag and drop in to an Explorer folder, it still leaves a copy in WIndows
Mail. Also you can't move whole email folders. Furthermroe it is hard to
search the Explorer folder for a keyword in the body of a message or my
sender's email address?

Jamiemac,

1. Correct, you need to get a @live.com email address.
2. The version that's on your PC has no adverts at all.
3. There is no cost for the @live address or PC version.
4. You can create save folders on your PC for your mail.
5. Can't tell you how it will work with an unreliable connection.

Good luck tho.

There may be an online version, possibly at live.com, but I was assuming
you wanted information about the version that's a program on your
computer.

WM can only access POP and IMAP email accounts. WLM does everything that WM
does, plus it can also access Hotmail accounts. Both are desktop email
clients and newsreaders. WM has one Inbox for multiple accounts, WLM has
separate Inboxes, etc. for each account you may access.
So far I have found out:
- You need to get a Windows Live Id

Not true, unless you want to use Hotmail and sync your account.
- Windows Live is full of adverts (but I can live with that I think)

Not true. The early version of WLMD had ads, but they are not longer
present in the current version.
- Windows Live has a subscription cost (I think)

Not true. You can pay for POP access to a Hotmail account, if you want, and
if it's available.
- Windows Live does not have any archive feaures like Outlook

Neither WM nor WLM have the features that Outlook has. You have to pay to
get advanced features. WLM saves emails to your computer, so you can back
them up.
- Not sure what happens if you have an unreliable broadband connection
like
me?

Any other info most welcome please?

You seem to be thinking of Windows Live Hotmail, which is the new version of
Hotmail.

P

PA Bear [MS MVP]

1. Windows Mail (WinMail) comes preinstalled in Vista. Windows Live Mail
(WLMail) must be downloaded/installed (free) in WinXP SP2 or Vista.

2. You cannot access a Hotmail account in WinMail unless you're a Hotmail
Plus subscriber.

3. WinMail is dead in the water, for all intents and purpose, while
development of WLMail continues. (It's all about the money, honey!)

Cheers Dave,

You would have thought Microsoft could come up with somethign a little less
confusing! Looks to me like I don't really need to upgrade to WLM as only
have one POP account and it is not Hotmail. Can't many other advantages.

Yes. Look here:

http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

I haven't tried archiving folders without archiving all the messages
in all the folders.

Most of your information about WLM is wrong.

A Live ID is desirable but not mandatory.
There are no ads whatsoever.
No cost, everything is free.
Same 'archive' features as OE and Windows Mail (i.e. export messages
or move/copy them to another folder).
Its connection requirements are no different than OE or Windows Mail.

Gary VanderMolen

Windows Live Mail has received a lot more development than WM,
and continues to be developed. There are quite a few small features
that work better in Windows Live Mail:

Auto-completion (while entering recipients) works much better
Live spell check while typing (like Outlook)
Auto-correction of common typos ('teh' changes to 'the')
Contacts are more flexible.
Etc., etc.
