On a second computer I'm using XP Home. I have a wireless keyboard and
mouse. The keyboard has shortcut buttons on top for Mail, Internet, etc.
Those work, thus indicating that the keyboard is communicating with the
computer. But none of the letters and nos. work. Is there an XP command
for locking the keyboard that I accidentally put into effect?

Not really. It is possible but not possible to do accidently (it would take hours of really technical editing). This makes the left control key act like F9. On a standard computer the value Scancode Map does not exist.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,43,00,1d,00,00,00,00,00

Start the onscreen keyboard (on Start Menu or press Winkey + U). Does this work?

What keyboard do you have.
