Windows installer

Can someone, gently, point me in the direction of some help on this. My
mate's pc goes into installer as soon as it's finished booting, and gets
nowhere. He has just added a new anti-virus, but claims there was none on
there before! At the moment I'm waiting for installer to finish (2 hours
22%) but I'm not confident that anything will work if and when it reaches
100%.
