Windows installer error.

I have been trying for the last hour to install iTunes
for my new ipod. I have bee having some problems though

I keep recieving this error:
Error -1601 : The Windows installer service could not be
acessed. This can occur if you are running windows in
safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly
installed.

I have searched and done everything the microsoft
knowledge base suggests, to no avail. What should I do?

As you've already tried the KB for this error, the only thing I can suggest is:

Windows Installer error
Go to Start/Run and type: regsvr32 msi.dll
then
Go to Start/Run and type
SFC /SCANNOW
Make sure you have your WinXP CD in the CD Drive before executing the SFC
command.
