Windows Installer Error

Hello Everyone, im stumped.

I have a Windows 2000 Native Domain. One of our W2K member servers
currently has all our networked printers installed. About 80% of our
printers are HP LaserJet 1300n.

This morning we went to install a brand new 1300n, usually this can be done
by going to the programs menu and clicking on the HP .msi package for add or
remove printers.
Here is the error I am getting:

Product: hp LaserJet 1150 / 1300 -- Error 1731.The source installation
package for the product hp LaserJet 1150 / 1300 is out of sync with the
client package. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the
installation package 'hp LaserJet 1150 1300.msi'.

On MSDN this error code is listed there, further looking into this i came
across one site that recommends uninstalling the software and reinstalling it
from the CD we have. The CD I've placed in the server this morning is the
same CD we have always used. I have 3 CDs i have save from the box of other
1300n printers and i have tried them all.

I have also copied the contents of the HP CD onto the Hard Drive of this
server and tried to launch the package install from there.
When I do this I get this error:
Another version of this product is already installed. installing this
version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this
product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.

If I uninstall this package what will happen to all my HP 1300n printers
that are installed on the network?

I guess I am looking for a work around, as lossing 80% of my networked
printers is undesirable.
How could this have happened. Is it the Windows Installer Version that has
changed?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

can you use just the driver itself instead of the whole printing package
from the CD?

Thanks for reposnding.
not sure what you mean by that,

There are probably about 50 of these 1300n printers installed on this
server, which are all installed on different printing ports. Each port name
is unique: hp laserJet1300n_copy_2 , hp laserJet1300n_copy_3 and so on and so
on. each port is given the printers static ip address.

How would I get our server to recognize a new instance of the 1300 printer
on a different port?

thanks for your help

you can go to hp's site and download the driver only for the printer instead
of the entire package, which *may* include an older driver when the printer
first was released

the download page is here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...riesId=238320&lang=zh-hant&cc=hk&swEnvOID=181

the printing system software listed might be newer than what you have also.

let me give you a scenario for you to better understand the easiest way to
go about installing these.
if for example your server has an ip of 192.168.0.100 and you start using
your printers at 192.168.0.101 you would use the add printer wizard and
first select local printer (uncheck automatically detect and install my p&p
printer). then on the ports, you would create a new tcp/ip port, in this
example, we'll use 192.168.0.101. then on the driver list, click have disk
and go to the directory where the 1300 driver was downloaded, finish the
wizard by setting any sharing, and printing test page if you like.
subsequent printers would be added as .102 .103 etc. using the same driver
(only have to install once; will confirm to use existing driver) and that's
the simplest way to do it. unless there is a specific reason where you need
to have all of the printing software installed, you could be adding extra
steps and time to your printer installation by doing it that way, compared
to just using the driver. you can name the ports what you like to be easier
for you to work with. and just fyi, you can manage your print server and
ports by going to the printers folder and clicking file -> server properties
