Windows Installer Ends Abuptly - Error 2932

I run Windows XP Pro SP2 and have been unable to successfully install
software requiring the Windows Installer for several months. I am
using the latest installer provided by Microsoft - Windows Installer
3.1 (V2) [WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe].

During each and every installation requiring Windows Installer, I
always get the same error message - "Product: ______. The installer
has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may
indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2932."
Microsoft's Event Viewer simply restates what I see during the failed
install. The link to the Help and Support Center provides no
additional information on Error 2932. The installer runs successfully
until it approaches the end of the install, ends abruptly, and then
displays the error message.

I have experienced this error message with the following failed
installations:

- KB934392 - Security Update for Word 2000
- KB934447 - Security Update for Excel 2000
- KB934526 - Security Update for Office 2000
- Itunes Setup
- Quicktime Installer
- JAVA update

I've scoured the MS Knowledgebase and the web thoroughly. Most
references address problems about installing MSI or getting it to work
once installed. MSI always runs for me. It simply fails to complete
the job.

I have done the things that follow but none has improved MSI's
performance:

- Uninstalling this version of WI, reverting to the previous version
of MSI.

- Reinstalling the latest version.

- Ran the MS Cleanup Utility for MSI.

- Unregistered and reregistered msiexec.exe from the command line

- Made certain permissions for MSDTC were correct

My goal is to avoid a Windows XP reinstall. Does anyone have an idea
about how I might tackle this problem? TIA for your thoughts.
