Windows Installer dialog appearing when using Cut/Copy and Paste

T

Test Man

I have a Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation on a Dell P4 3.06 GHz with
HT, 1.5GB RAM.

Lately when I try to use the Cut/Copy function in Windows Explorer, or
right-click on a file or shortcut in Windows Explorer, the Desktop or the
Start menu, I get a Windows Installer "Preparing to install" dialog
appearing for a split second. Does anyone know why this is happening and
what to do to solve this? I'm sure it didn't do that before the 23rd Dec
(when I went on holiday) but I have noticed it doing it since I've been back
on the 26th Dec.

One of the applications (that use Windows Installer technology) may be trying to repair itself. The usual fix is to uninstall the application, remove the MSI information of that app using Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and reinstall the application again.

If the corresponding application name is not displayed, check the Event logs. For more information, check the following article:

Hi

Thanks, but that link links to the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility, which
I know about from using it before. How does that relate to my problem and
what do I have to do to solve it?
