windows getting slower

Some basic windows functions have recently become very slow. eg in windows
explorer the drop down menus take 15 seconds or more to appear. Right
clicking on files also takes a long time. Internet access and other programs
are ok.
I do not have a restore point before this problem occured because I had a
cleanout unfortunately and deleted earlier restore points
