windows ftp

whenever i upload a file, the permissions of the file are set so that nobody
can access it. any file that i upload, i have to click on it and edit the
properties.
obviously when i am uploading an entire website of over 400 files this is
unproductive.
I have searched around for options on ftp and internet file transfer and so
on, but i can find nothing.
any ideas?
it might not be a problem with windows but it the only thing i can think of.

are you ftp'ing into a pulblic dir e.g. /home/ftp or a
user VWS folder e.g. /home/WWWuser/public_html/www/ ?
this sounds more like a unix file ownship type error is
why I ask... which really isn't covered in a Windows OS
group. I would simply verify by the network administrator
that the file permissions on the server are being assigned
properly, for changing file permissions 1 at a time can be
lengthy to do

unfortunately it's not a unix server so thats not it, and the owner of the
ftp directory is me and i am signing in as the primary user.
i used smartFTP and the permissions are all fine.
But that takes time to load up, and sometimes i find windows more
convenient.... well I did anyway, until i reformatted.
