Windows folder size

Alexmp

One machine on my network running XP Pro 2002 service pack 3 ahs an
excessively large windows folder in comparison to all other machines.
58.26Gig with 48,789 files and 1939 folders.

in comparing to other machines on my network it is 10 time larger. I need to
reduce the size of the folder as it is using in excess of 50% of the hard
drive.

I am so frustrated that I forgot to thank respondents in advance. I am
alittle alarmed at the size of the folder and am looking for a solution in
reducing it.

Thanksin advance,

Not sure I can help much, but ... you might print out a list of that
folder for comparison purposes.
Any chance the SP3 downloaded installer file is sitting in the folder of
that machine?
Are you using win Explorer to see the file sizes or some 3rd party app?
Have you run any AV and malware scans with recently updated programs?
What specifically have you run?
Have these recently been upgraded and the old OS not yet removed?

You've given VERY little to go on. Much more detail could have been
given and may be necessary to even guess at your problem.

IN Explorer click the Size column to put the largest files at the top.
How big ARE the largest files, say the top 5, and what are their names?

In addition to Twayne's advice (or as an alternative) you might consider
downloading and runing JDiskReport:

You need to find out which of the Windows subfolders are using all that
space. My guess is that your WINDOWS\Installer folder is probably full
of orphaned .msp files.

Thanks all for replying,

As it turns out they are CSC files which i ddin't even knpw existed on this
machine. I installed the file utility suggested and saw them, and allowed
viewing of the files.

My understanding is they are associated with off line files which was active
on this machine and would never apperar to synchronize. I disabeled the off
line files and now have 8 sub folders with between 6.5 and 6.8 gig of data in
them.

Is it possible to delete these files with out danmaging the integrety of the
system?

Well, it would appear that repeating the process deletes ,more of the
unwanted files. I have recouped 20% of the used space after 2 attempts. I
believe it's only deleating one sub directory at a time.

Thanks all.
