windows firewall

A few weeks ago, my internet security program, and the windows XP firewall suspiciously had become disabled. I carted my machine off to the techs in town, they said they ran my machine thru a bunch of virus, and Trojan programs, then they took out my existing security program, which was due to expire a few months later, installed another av program, but failed to install a new firewall. I put Sygate onto my machine as a quickie measure of protection, and went to the windows security section and tried to turn on the firewall. I had told the techs when I took the computer to them in the first place that the XP firewall had become disabled and I didn't know why. They said I had become infected with some sort of virus which they never told me what it was, and obviously they failed to correct the windows firewall problem even though it was on the order sheet they drew up. I am still unable to enable it.

This is the message it continues to send:
Due to an unidentified problem, windows cannot display Windows Firewall Settings and then the OK button.

I've gone to the network connections, done the right click to properties, and then try to work with the advanced tab and configure thru there, no luck. same problem and same message. Any suggestions as to what I might do to fix this problem??

My machine is Media Center 2005
XP SP2
All patches are up to date
Maintenance programs include: ETrust AV, AdAwareSE, Spybot Search and Destroy, NoAdware, Registry Mechanic, Registry Healer, Spyware blaster, CCleaner, Window Washer, XCleaner, Hijack This, and Window Cleaner.

Before taking my machine to the techs, I had run all of these programs and found nothing at all. I'm at a loss now as to what has turned off my Windows Firewall. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Why would you want to turn on the Windows Firewall? That's the first thing I
turn off.

Get ZoneAlarm free edition.

Most "modern" software firewall (written for XP) will automatically turn the
Windows XP SP2 firewall. This is to eliminate any potential software conflict
that can occur when running two software firewalls. Sygate is such software
firewall.

You may have to re-set the repository of the WMI/WBEM system. (How, I am not
sure since I will be needing to does this this week-end for my new Comodo
Personal Firewall setup.)

haha.....I thought if I turned it on with my Sygate freebie, it might help keep me better protected. I'm torn between Sygate and Zone Alarm Pro. I liked Sygate before Norton bought them out and got rid of it, but I've hung onto the freebie. Its been good so far.
My reasoning was: 2 firewalls going might be beneficial?

Thanks for your response. I hope somebody will come to tell me how to re-set the WMI/WBEM system. I'd be at a loss figureing that one out.
Sygate didn't turn it off.......I had tried to turn on the XP firewall first when I realized the techs 'failed to remember' to install a new firewall. When it shot me the same recurring message, I got the Sygate up and running as a filler until I could figure out which direction to take.

As a general rule you should not have two software firewalls running at the
same time. It will not give you any more protection, and could cause
problems.
