windows firewall

After resetting the computer to factory settings i tried installing
sp2(twice) through microsoft updates and the firewall keeps getting
corrupted, unable to enable firewall as the page is grey i tried everything
but still not able to acess firewall,scanned for viruses and trojans have
sygate firewall installed (temporary) but still have the problem any
suggestions???
This is for a friends computer who had 322 infections including trojans and
his computer crashed (no wonder) and i am trying to help

Start | Run <type in> services.msc <enter>
Make sure Windows Firewall\internet... is set to auto

And download the entire SP2 package then install it

Did you do a full reformat / re-install? (factory settings?)

I would say with that many infections you should zero wipe the HDD and
start from scratch with a clean install. Assuming you did that
download the SP2 update and install it manually, don't use windows
updates. After that disable the windows firewall and then install
windows updates (59 or so of them) then install Sygate Firewall.

Thanks for your advice Jonah i will redo his computer and zero wipe the HDD
and try another install from another source than updates will keep you
informed how i will get on.
 
Have you check Event Viewer and checked for errors in the System branch. If
you are having problems with Firewall, there should be some errors.
 
Thank you every one for your help i have (with your help ) solved my friends
computer problem and hopefuly there will be no more trouble.
