Windows Features, Indexing missing

I just reinstalled Vista Home Premium, but have discovered that Indexing is
not working. When I go to Control Panel\Indexing, nothing shows except
"Indexing is not running." The Modify and Advanced buttons are greyed out.

In addition, when I try to get into Windows Features via Control
Panel\Programs and Features\Turn Windows Features On or Off, nothing is
shown in the feature box.

Does anyone have a suggestion for how I might recover these functions?

Thank you.

I don't think this applies. The Indexing icon is present in Control Panel,
but when I open it, it states "index is not running, and the Advanced and
Modify buttons are greyed out.

I hope it doesn't apply, anyway, since the link ends, "this is a problem."

Make sure the Indexing Service under Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
Services is running.
