Windows Explorer Sorting

Hi,

I have 2 PC's

The Desktop which has WinXP Pro SP3 the main computer, been using for the
past 3 years. The files listed below sorts 01 to 20 that seems to use the
first two characters. This is what I expected and want the sort order to
be. However...

The Laptop, which has WinXP Home SP2 that I just got, used. It's plain Jane
and it is used for another purpose. But the file sort order is not like the
above list as I want it to be. The list below shows how the laptop sorts
the same files, which is not in numeric sequence.

What can I do to get the sort order on the laptop to be like my desktop?

If Windows was actually included in the sale of the used hardware then you
would have received the installation media for Windows (or there exists a
hidden partition which you use to restore the factory-time image). If the
OS was not included, what you got was hardware that included a polluted hard
disk.

So why didn't you flatten your new used host to install a FRESH copy of
Windows? You don't know what tweaks, kiddie porn, flawed registry entries,
or illegal software might still be on that used host. If you did not
receive the installation media for Windows with the used host, go back to
the seller to demand they include it along with the COA and product key;
else, you'll have to go buy a legitimate copy of Windows.

The original Windows XP Install Disk and the Driver Disk did come with the
laptop. I did a fresh Windows install, loaded all the drivers. Which by
the way has nothing to do with my original question.

Anyway, I found out the answer by adding a registry line.

TweakUI would have fixed the sorting issue.

It would also be kind of you (considering this is archived indefinitely) to
give the actual solution you found instead of vaguely referencing what it
was you discovered someplace. ;-)

As for your choice of a next computer - different issues is all you will
find. I support a little of them all and if there is one OS choice,
computer choice, etc that has no issues (or even one that has equivalently
more or less) - I have not found it.

Give and take.

It's wise you did a fresh installation on a used computer, however. Very
wise.

I'm guessing it is the NoStrCmpLogical data item in the registry that was
mentioned in the KB article to which I gave Mark a link.

It was the NoStrCmpLogical line, but I found the answer before I read
VanguardLH post the hardway (Websearch). I went to the posted link
after the fact, it confirmed what I found out.

The desktop PC had the line with the setting of 1, so I just added
that to the laptop registry, restarted and it sorts the way
I am used to.
